What is Tree Care?

Before we can discuss important tree care terms, it’s essential to know what tree care is and what it entails. Tree care is the requirement needed for maintaining healthy, happy trees. This includes regularly inspecting for pests and tree diseases.

Additionally, tree care includes basic tree services to help your trees thrive, such as tree pruning, trimming, fertilizing, and watering.

Need-to-Know Tree Care Terms

Now that you understand the basics, here are the top tree care terms you should know about.

Arborist: Tree care professionals who have studied arboriculture, or the science of shrubs and trees. They can effectively diagnose tree disease and help your trees thrive.

CODIT: An acronym for Compartment of Decay in Trees.

Crown: Also known as the “canopy,” the crown is the upper portion of your tree. It is measured from the lowest branch to the highest, most outreaching limb, as well as to the highest point of your tree.

Deep root fertilization: This refers to when you insert a probe, or soil needle, about eight to 12 inches below the ground at the base of the tree. You’ll then inject a liquid fertilizer directly into the tree’s root system to provide the essential nutrients needed for it to grow.

Dead-wooding: The process of removing all dying, diseased, or dead limbs, growth, and branches from your tree.

Drip Line: The area under the crown’s circumference. Also called the “critical root zone,” the drip line is where water drips from the tree’s leaves and branches.

Root collar: The section of the tree where its roots meet its trunk. It’s important to keep the root collar free of too much soil or mulch to help the carbon monoxide and oxygen flow freely. Burying the root collar can lead to insect infestations and tree disease.

Shirt raise: Pruning only the lower foliage and branches of the tree to promote sunlight and reduce obstructions.

Tree pruning: A process that involves selectively removing branches and leaves to promote the health of the entire tree.

Tree spraying: To spray the trees down with liquid insecticides or fungicides to protect them from pests, fungi, and harmful insects.

Tree topping: The complete removal of the top portion of your tree.

Tree trimming: This involves shaping your tree’s branches and stems to create a beautiful, uniform look. Tree trimming is necessary for boosting your property’s aesthetic appeal.

Trunk injection: The process of making tiny holes in the tree’s trunk to directly treat its vascular system.

Stump removal: When the entire stump, including the roots, is removed. This is the best solution for diseased or rotting stumps.

Stump grinding: When a stump grinding machine is used to excavate a tree stump without removing the roots. The arborists will use the machine to grind down the stump below ground level, leaving no unsightly holes after the process has been completed.
