Van Nuys is the most populous neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, located to the north of downtown Los Angeles, CA. It is surrounded by Sherman Oaks, Reseda, Panorama City and North Hollywood. The area was inhabited by various Native American tribes for thousands of years. Van Nuys was founded and named for Isaac Newton Van Nuys, a rancher and entrepreneur from New York who was part of the Suburban Homes Company when it purchased 48,000 acres in the San Fernando Valley. The construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct brought water to the region, allowing for further development and leading to its annexation by the city of Los Angeles in 1915. The city of Van Nuys is now heavily developed and densely populated, with a population of just over 100,000 residents.
